Twitter

Armed with a bit of knowledge about what Twitter is all about, share your thoughts on this fast growing online phenomenon.

At Humanities department, we use twitter all the time. We have 429 followers and we have organizations with similar interset that are following us such as Publishers weekly, NYtimes Books. I think Twitter is a great marketing tool to broadcast our programs to our customers or followers.

LibraryThing

If you already use LibraryThing, what’s your favourite part?

Yes, I do use LibraryThing and what I like about it is to read people's comments on a particular book.

Online Productivity Tools

Do you see yourself using these tools or will you stick to more traditional methods. If you were to use one of these tools regularly, which would it be and why?

Yes, I see myself using Google Docs for my "budget travelling" presentation. I am going to upload my power point presentation at Google Docs, so I can access it any branch and not to worry about the different versions of powerpoint.

Flickr & YouTube

Comment on the quality, entertainment value, or usefulness of the content on these sites.

Youtube: This a video sharing website. Friends and family can share videos but it is a public website so anyone can see the videos you post. (my sister in law's wedding is on youtube). You can also use it as a learning tool: in our last staff meeting we watched a clip from youtube.

Flickr: This is a photo sharing website. I only used it few times to find a particular image and I found it easy to use.

RSS

Were you able to successfully set up your RSS feed? If not, where did you run into problems? If you were successful, does this make information-gathering more convenient for you?

Yes, I was able to set up my RSS feed with Avenue Magazine. This saves me lots of time, because I can find about Calgary's events right in my inbox.

Google Universe

Google Translate: Wow, I had no idea that google has this product. From now on every time my 7 year old daughter asks me to translate a french word from one of her books, I am going to use Google Translate.

This is a great product, not only it gives you translation but if you click on "View detailed dictionary" you get images, related phrases, synonyms, usage examples and web definitions.

Google Translate has many languages such as Chinese, Arabic, Icelandic but not all of them has the View detailed dictionary option.

Facebook

For you, is Facebook useful or a time-waster?

In general I do not use facebook, however, the only time I use my facebook account is to keep track of my reading list. My favorite feature of facebook is "Books" application which is a simple reading list application that tracks my current reading list, my to-read list, and books I've already read, and gives me a glance view of my friends' books, too.

Wikipedia

How easy or difficult was to find articles that needed editing? Were the errors you found factual or grammar/spelling?

For this part of the assignment, I edited an article about Calgary Public Library:

I added a link to one of the Calgary Public Library facts (the annual circulation for 2008) which was very easy and took me only few minutes.

Delicious

What are the advantages of storing, sharing, and tagging web content this way? What are the disadvantages?

advantage: To share CPL 's favorites websites with customers.

disadvantage: No structure for the tags: if you don't know the correct tag you might not be able to find the information that you were looking for.

What do you hope to learn from CPL 2.0?

I am hoping to become more tech-savvy after doing all the assignment.
